In the process of restoring as many pieces as possible, we have had the original chimney cleaned and repaired so that we can now use it with gas logs (be sure to come to dinner in the fall or winter for some awesome braised short ribs over some kind of yummy potato served in the new dining room in front of the fire). I digress. Part of the restoration involved removing the mantle from that FP in order to replace the cracked and separated marble surround. While the mantle is free, we're taking it to be "dipped" to remove all the old lead-based paint and start from scratch.
So, as you might imagine, when you remove things in a 60 yr old house, you can find some treasures. We found a letter with several pictures enclosed. The letter was somewhat inconsequential requesting a new clip for a downspout and the photos were enclosed for the purpose of clarification. (I'm guessing this letter never got mailed...) This explains the red sharpie arrow across the photo, but try to look past that.
